UPAL Project 1 - COHORT VI - Group 3: Kristyn, Ramona, Kimberly, and Jessica

Kristyn: CREATIVE
Creative to me means to be colorful and to think outside the box.  There is a grey box in the center of my square with the word colorful around the box which is meant to encourage people to think outside the box because it is a colorful world out there!

Why did you choose the creativity prompt you did?
I took the word creative and thought about synonyms.

Thinking about your experience today, what is 1 thing you want principals to understand about Student Creativity and how to foster, nourish, develop it?
Student creativity is diverse.  What they feel is creative is unique to them and is connected someway to their learning. It is a colorful reflection of who they are.

Through the experience of today’s session, what have you learned about creativity for which you see a connection to the work of a school principal? Explain this in a sentence or 2 (or more).
Creativity will look different to everyone.

Ramona: CONNECT
My square “Connect”.  It represents a/the system. The system is a web where everything is interconnected.

Why did you choose the creativity prompt you did?
I choose this prompt because everything we do impacts several other things that we may or may not anticipate it impacting. This requires one to be creative when a leader is making decisions, making change in an organization, and determining allocation of resources.

Thinking about your experience today , what is 1 thing you want principals to understand about Student Creativity and how to foster, nourish, develop it?
Creativity allows students to look inside themselves. It is an opportunity to be reflective and expressive in a non-judgemental way. Giving students an opportunity to be creative allows them to develop critical thinking, metacognition, and to think about multiple ways to approach their thinking when it comes to their work. It allows them to expand their knowledge as they use creativity to develop these skills.

Through the experience of today’s session, what have you learned about creativity for which you see a connection to the work of a school principal? Explain this in a sentence or 2 (or more).
It is another way of looking outside the box, to having multiple perspectives to create a vision based on a common goal. It allows for collaboration in this process and for individual expression in achieving organizational goals.

Kimberly: DIVERSITY
The title of my square is, Diversity. The square not only represents cultural diversity, but it speaks to the importance of having diversified ideas when collaborating on a common goal or plan. The colors represent an array of ideas and the hands symbolize the commonality amongst us all because we have hands!

Why did you choose the creativity prompt you did?
The reason I chose this particular word is because I wanted to emphasize the importance of diversity in various aspects of thinking and collaboration. I felt it was important to show the collaboration of hands because they reflect the beauty of people of all working together.

Thinking about your experience today, what is one thing you want principals to understand about student creativity and how to foster, nourish, and develop it?
As school leaders, it is important to allow students to be creative, as well as, reflective of their thoughts and work, so that they can develop the critical thinking skills needed to be successful leaders. Students should be allowed to collaboratively create work that deepens their understanding of a specific concept or idea. School leaders should provide professional development sessions to instructional staff that would support them meeting this goal

Through the experience of today’s session, what have you learned about creativity for which you see a connection to the work of a school principal? Explain this in a sentence or 2 (or more).
Today’s lesson was an eye opener for me because I normally do not categorize myself as a creative person. However, as I pondered more about this, I find that I am creative, but in a bit of an abstract way. As a school principal, I will use my creativity for visionary purposes, but I will collaborate with my team to assist in the execution of our vision.

Jessica: REFLECTIVE
The prompt that I chose was REFLECTIVE. I believe that as an educator in order to grow and provide our scholars with the education that they deserve we must be constantly reflective of our craft. Each child is unique and every class develops its own personality. What works for one will not always fit the needs of another. What makes sense to us may not be understood by our scholars. We have to keep in mind our end goal. Our focus is to help each scholar grow. Continuous reflection and adjustments are needed in order for this to take place in a way that is most beneficial for our babies.

After the experience today, I believe that it is extremely important that principals understand how important it is to foster creativity in our scholars. It is amazing to see how children can comprehend and take ownership over an learning experience if they are encouraged to approach the activity in a creative way. Instead of focusing on whether something is right or wrong, but on what the scholar is taking away from the experience.

Today’s activity has made me reflect on how if we allow scholar’s to creatively approach an assignment we as the educator can see interpretations of the assignment in ways that we previously have not thought of before. In this way, we allow scholars to own the knowledge that they are gaining.
